Moderate benefits gained from weight loss – Fairbanks Daily News-Miner

Obese people who reduce their weight by only 5 percent receive improvements in metabolic functions of many tissues, including fat, liver and muscle, according to the National Institutes of Health.

During a Washington School of Medicine in St. Loud study, people who achieved 5 percent weight reduction significantly decreased body and liver fat, decreased plasma levels of glucose, insulin, triglycerides and leptin, according to scientists.

More than one in three Americans is obese, leading to increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other harmful conditions.
