Push for digital detox for children – Ten Eyewitness News

Research from Deakin University is warning parents about the dangers to children who overdose on screen time, while urging youngsters to take a ‘digital detox’.

The detox would see children enjoy one technology-free day each week during these school holidays.

Deakin University researcher Dr Trina Hinkley said cutting down just 30 minutes of digital time per day can help prompt healthier habits among children.

Experts are also concerned parents aren’t aware of the consequences of too much screen time for children, with research revealing it can prompt poor language, cognitive and social skills.

Dr Hinkley said some children are spending four hours “and more” on digital devices each day, far more than the maximum two hours – for children five years and older – that the Australian government guidelines suggest.

“Parents seem to be fairly aware of the physical effects but not necessarily on other areas of development,” Dr Hinkley said.
