LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A new weight loss option approved by the FDA is coming to Lubbock next month.

It’s called the Orbera Balloon Insertion.

Instead of surgery, it’s endoscopic which means a tube is inserted down the throat and into the stomach where it releases a balloon that fills up some space. So the patient is forced to eat less.

Then, in a similar procedure about 6 months later, the balloon is removed.

Dr. Timothy Miller, a gastroenterologist, says the best thing about the Orbera Balloon is that weight loss can begin as soon as the procedure ends, because there’s no down time like you would need after a surgery.  He says, “Some patients wake up from the procedure with some nausea and abdominal cramping which can be easily treated with medications. But since there’s no incisions, no hospital stay, we do this at our outpatient endoscopy center. Patients walk out of our office the same day within hours of the procedure and there is basically no recovery time and their weight loss begins immediately.”

Dr. Miller adds this is not recommended for the morbidly obese, but for those who need to lose between 30 and 90 pounds. The cost is about $68 hundred dollars and It is not yet covered by insurance.  However, he says that includes a year-long program of nutrition and exercise through their partnership with Wellness Today.

Dr. Timothy Miller and Dr. Boyd Fenton, both practice at Lubbock Digestive Disease Associates where they are set to begin this new weight loss option sometime in April, 2016.

You can find Lubbock Digestive Disease Associates at 3610 24th Street in Lubbock.
