Intrepid Spirit center focuses on brain health – The Killeen Daily Herald

Fort Hood’s Intrepid Spirit team hosted an open house in observance of Brain Injury Awareness Month last Thursday.

Dr. Scot Engel, Intrepid Spirit director, welcomed guests and talked about how traumatic brain injury, or TBI, has been a focal point in the military.

“Traumatic brain injury, or concussion, is the signature injury in the global war on terror,” he said.

Engel said the Intrepid Spirit has four different sections within its footprint to address medical, rehab, pain management and psychological health of patients with traumatic brain injury.

Retired Brig. Gen. Rhonda Cornum addressed the guests, sharing from her experiences as a prisoner of war and her service since her release. Learning from her experiences, Cornum said, “We need to treat psychological health like we do physical health. And we don’t wait until people are failing to do something.”

Cornum also said she helped develop the Army’s Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program, which focuses on alternative approaches to treating and preventing combat-stress-related disorders by “approaching adversity with resilience and optimism.”
