Flowers Hospital performed its first Orbera procedure on February 25, 2016.

Orbera is weight loss procedure approved by the FDA in the summer of 2015.

Bariatric Surgeon Scott Robbins says this new program will help people achieve their weight loss goals.

“It is a non-surgical weight loss tool,” said Dr. Robbins. “It is a balloon that is able to be inserted into the stomach through the mouth and then subsequently taken out 6 months later through the mouth.”

The balloon is inflated inside the stomach to make the patient feel full.

“When you eat, you kind of have a sense of heaviness and a sense of fullness all the time so you tend to not eat as much,” said Dr. Robbins.

This specific program is not designed for people who are obese or have a lot of weight to lose. It is designed for those with a body mass index between 30 and 40.

“This is not necessarily the solution if you’ve got 100, 150 pounds to lose,” said Dr. Robbins. “But for someone who is looking to lose 20, 40, 50 maybe even 60 pounds, this is a great adjunct to being able to help you along with that.”

Orbera requires effort from the patient. People who choose to participate in the program must make healthy lifestyle choices to keep the weight off.

“This program also incorporates a 12 month nutritional counseling program to help people understand what they have learned while the balloon is in place and then how to advance that into their lives afterwards once the balloon has been removed,” said Dr. Robbins.
