SAVANNAH, Ga.
Taking a quest to the grocery store–
For most of us, it’s merely an additional thing on our “to-do” list…
But– if you live in certain neighborhoods in Chatham County, going to the supermarket might not be something you can easily do so easily…
Instead, the only selections you have actually nearby could only be convenience stores.
But just what if you and your family are seeking healthier options?
News 3’s Courtney Cole did some digging to locate some fresh substitutions surfacing in Savannah.

“It almost feels adore you’re trapped…”
Trapped inside your own neighborhood.
That’s exactly how it feels to Eleanor Collins and to many others that don’t have actually a supermarket within strolling distance of their homes.
“…you have actually to wait a long time, and it’s a whole big ordeal, takes all day to strategy it out..and if you don’t strategy it out right, you’re ending up at estate along with no food…so it’s a lot of work…”
A lot of job the mother of three says she was doing for 5 years–free of a car.
“At one point, we built a cart for our bicycle, so that we could haul a week’s worth of groceries home, trailing it behind our bike, and that worked for a while…However it doesn’t job as quickly as it’s raining or as quickly as it’s truly cold…so the only various other option is a convenience store that’s a block away from my house…we can easily buy chips and soda and beer and cigarettes…there’s adore a Chinese meals place and there use to be a fried chicken place, However they closed. So there’s not truly a whole lot of selections within strolling distance.”
That’s why Collins is so grateful that organizations adore Farm Truck 912, an extension of the Forsyth Farmer’s Market, are now easily available in her neighborhood.
“It’s quite affordable and a lot of times, cheaper compared to going to the grocery store, for the quality of the make especially…and it’s so close you can easily walk here and you’re not spending the cash on a cab or giving a person gas cash to offer you a ride, choose you up,” Collins told News 3.
And that’s due to the fact that Farm Truck 912 is now driving in to neighborhoods on the East and West sides of Savannah every week.
“Those neighborhoods were specifically selected based on data and research of neighborhoods that are dealing along with severe poverty, meals insecurity and unemployment,” said Cyndi Satlow, the Forsyth Farmer’s Market Project Manager.
Satlow says her groups see this as an opportunity to improve the quality of life for people in communities throughout the city along with healthier options–and they jumped at the chance!
“Healthy and balanced meals access is very crucial due to the fact that we’re talking concerning our overall health. We’re finding a direct correlation to just what we’re placing in our bodies and our bodily outcome,” Satlow said.
But modification isn’t only coming through selling the fresh produce…
“We have actually terrific education on the truck where we’re sampling products, we’re getting people to try things, we’re having a beautiful conversation about meals and nourishment and health,” said Satlow.
Not only talking, However making a new partnership along with Healthy and balanced foods.
“So we’re truly attempting to make a modification in the mentality in Healthy and balanced food,” Satlow told News 3.
And just what do convenience store owners and mangers have actually to say concerning this?
Well, I reached out to much more compared to a dozen and they all declined to talk to me on-camera.
But there is one food-gas mart chain that’s changing the their approach.
You might know them as “Enmark”, However over the last 6-months they’ve shifted to just what they call “Enmarket.”
And the vice president of the company says he’s looking to do much more compared to merely sell products.
“It’s truly brought with each other a different cross section of the community of people that are truly interested in evolving much more toward health,” said Ryan Chandler the Vice President of Enmark.
So why aren’t much more convenience stores going this route?
Chandler tells me he thinks it all comes down to money…
“I believe the trick is…a lot of people make the mistake of merely dipping their toe in a little bit…and as quickly as it doesn’t sell in the initial couple of weeks, they say, ‘oh, customers don’t want it, they’re merely saying it, they don’t truly want it’, well you truly have actually to commit to it.”
It’s a commitment that some store owners might feel is merely too expensive to take on, However Chandler says you can’t put a dollar quantity on the the adjustments you can easily make in people’s lives.
