Veggie Vouchers are coming again this year. The board of directors of Carroll County Food Sunday at their annual Strategic Planning Session in January voted to distribute to our clients $110,000 worth of Veggie Vouchers during 2016.
These vouchers are funded in part by a grant from the United Way of Central Maryland together with additional funds received from our generous Carroll County donors.
Veggie Vouchers in the amount of $5, $10, $15 or $20 will be given with each week’s grocery allotment based on family size. Presently, we also provide one pound of meat per family member. Veggie Vouchers can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from the various farmers markets throughout Carroll County. They can be used each week or held until the client has sufficient vouchers for larger purchases.
Our board of directors considers this program a win for both our clients and Carroll County farmers with the prospect of up to $110,000 being returned to many of our local area farmers via Veggie Voucher purchases.
Food Sunday also provides weekly vouchers to purchase milk from our small local stores and supermarkets. Fresh milk, coupled with local fresh fruits and vegetables, aid in helping to provide a healthier diet. We have budgeted $60,000 for the cost of milk vouchers in 2016.
You can help fund our milk voucher budget by registering to run in our annual “Milk Run” 5K race scheduled for Saturday, May 14, starting at 8:30 a.m. on the Washington Road Community Trail beginning and ending at Carroll Community College. All funds from this event will be used to provide milk to our clients. You can register for the race online at ccfoodsunday.org or call Chairman Frank Baylor at 443-340-2061.
Many thanks to Runnymede Elementary School staff and students for holding its 18th annual Walk day this past Friday, April 29, to raise funds for Carroll County Food Sunday. The funds raised from the walk will be added to the $147,147 Runnymede has raised for Food Sunday the past 17 years.
