KC Pet Project takes in 25 chinchillas from former breeder – KMBC Kansas City

The KC Pet Project is caring for more than two dozen chinchillas rescued from the house of a Kansas City breeder.

The rodents were kept in filthy, hot conditions. Their soft fur was left matted and tangled.

“A lot of them have actually considerable mats all over their bodies. Their hair is very, very matted, so it’s going to take some time to brush out and make their coats healthy again,” said Tori Fugate of the KC Pet Project. “Some appear to have actually fungal infections.”

The house where they were bred was filthy and had no air conditioning. The breeder said she could no longer care for them.

“She had to be moved into a house and so her daughter was contacting people in the area trying to find placement for all of the animals,” said Fugate. “Once we saw the house they were living in, we just knew we had to help.”

Many of the rodents will need veterinary care, serious brushing and foster homes.

The female chinchillas will need to be monitored for four months to ensure they’re not pregnant.

The KC Pet Project said it would certainly appreciate the public’s health with donations of cages, food and money to care for the chinchillas. The items can be found at Petco. The KC Pet Project also has actually a wishlist on Amazon.com
