Use your train journey to digitally detox; here’s how – India Today

I have been on plenty of train journeys. Primarily because I love travelling to offbeat places that are connected only by a strong Indian Railways network. I understand why a lot of you avoid travelling to these places — train journeys are just so boring! More importantly, they waste a lot of time. That’s how even I felt in my initial years. But with time, I learnt how to make the most of that time — without the help of music, movies and anything digital. Enough years passed, I started finding it interesting. And now, I look forward to those journeys. Trust me, it’s a hell lot of quality time that we otherwise crave for in daily life. Wondering how? Try applying these useful tips, and who knows, you might start loving train journeys more than ever.

Get to know somebody
Think about it. How many times do you meet new people in your daily life? Or make new friends for that matter? A train journey gives you enough time to know somebody. Thanks to the lack of network, there are no phone calls and pings to distract your conversation. There’s always something or the other to take away from these brief meetings — the other person’s experience might change your perspective towards something in life, you might learn of a new place that you never knew existed, or you might even make a friend for life. There are plenty of possibilities. Besides, meeting strangers and learning about their ways of life and cultures are an important part of travel.

Make plans
Train time is slow time. It gives you plenty of time to think and reflect upon life. We often keep procrastinating the creation of plans just because we don’t get enough empty time in our daily lives. Well, make use of the time you have got here! Pull out your diary and start making your plans. You might even end up making a detailed itinerary of a long-awaited trip, along with the dates.

Take stunning photographs
No traveller can deny the fact that train journeys take us past some of the most picturesque landscapes. Take advantage of this opportunity and hone your travel photography skills. Try different aperture settings and play with the light. By the end of the journey, you can have an entire album of some amazing photographs. Also read: 5 most picturesque train journeys in India

Read a book
Gadgets have drawn us away from the books. Relive your childhood — when there were no laptops, phones and tablets to keep us engaged, and read a book of your choice. You can read a novel that you have been wanting to read for the longest time. Time will slip away before you know and you will be left with the satisfaction of knowing a new story. As a bonus, there will be plenty of nostalgia to accompany you. After you are done reading the book, sit quietly and reflect upon your thoughts while looking out of the window — it’s blissful!

Do nothing
Sounds weird, isn’t it? Let me ask you, when was the last time you were free? Free of any task, that is. I bet you won’t be able to recall. Take time out to sit and do nothing — those are precious moments and hard to get daily life. Reflect upon your life, make new goals in your mind, remember a sweet memory and smile — live life in the simplest of ways, for sometime. Take a nap if you feel sleepy.
