After years of yo-yoing, Gemma Bateman finally kicked her weight into touch – and dropped an impressive four dress sizes.
The 31-year-old joined weight-loss organisation Slimming World last July after a family holiday to Disneyland Paris left her feeling lethargic and self-conscious.
The Top Valley resident lost half a stone in just three weeks – and nine months later she is four and a half stones lighter and has dropped down to a slinky size 12.
The mother-of-one followed the slimming club’s Extra Easy plan, started going to the gym and rekindled her love of kickboxing.
She said: “I had been toying with the idea of dieting for a while and then I saw a photo of me in Disneyland with Buzz Lightyear and I knew I had to do something.
“I’d always tried exercise before but nothing happened because I wasn’t eating right as well. I joined Slimming World because my friends had been successful on their plan.

“Joining my local group was the best decision I ever made. I realised I wasn’t alone and I have built up a great support network of friends.”
Gemma said joining Slimming World was the “best decision” she has ever made. She started her journey weighing 15st 13lbs and now she weighs 11st 3lbs.
She said: “My health has improved and I have now found a way to live life and stay in control too.
“I have found ways to still enjoy all of my favourite meals, they’re just cooked differently, and I’ve discovered new ones too.
“It really is easy. I can still eat cheese, chips and pasta – this was really important to me – and not forgetting chocolate and the odd glass of wine.
“I couldn’t believe I could eat all of my favourites and still lose weight.”
Now Gemma has trained to become a consultant for the slimming club, and is launching her own group in Bestwood Park on Thursday, April 28.

She said: “Losing four stone has made such a difference to my life – I feel so much more confident and I am looking forward to sharing my journey and supporting my members to achieve their weight loss dreams. I’m living in a whole new world thanks to Slimming World.”
Gemma’s mum, Denise Hardy, said she is so proud of her daughter for losing the weight and starting her own Slimming World class.
The 58-year-old, of Newstead Abbey park, added: “She was always a confident person, but she lost that spark when she put the weight on and now she’s back to how she was before.
“I think she will be a great consultant because she’s very outgoing and she gets on with people.”
The new group takes place at Robin Hood Primary School, in Eastglade Road, on Thursday nights at 5.30pm and 7.30pm.
What Gemma ate before joining Slimming World
Breakfast: A big bowl of chocolate Shreddies
Lunch: A sandwich, packet of crisps and chocolate
Dinner: A takeaway, mainly pizza, two to three times a week
Drinks: Beer is very calorific and I haven’t had a pint since starting Slimming World because it isn’t worth it
Snacks: I would just eat anything I could get my hands on – chocolate, biscuits, crisps
And what she eats now
Breakfast: A Slimming World cooked breakfast with tomatoes, mushrooms, low-fat meat and eggs cooked with Frylight
Lunch: Chicken salad
Dinner: Lots of homemade meals – my favourite being beef bourguignon with mashed potato and vegetables, or spaghetti bolognese
Drinks: I haven’t had to cut out too much because I’ve always drunk sugar-free fizzy drinks anyway
Snacks: I still eat chocolate, biscuits and crisps but it’s all in moderation
