Most popular holiday destinations

Analysis of online holiday searches by the comparison website Travel Supermarket has shown that Spain is the most popular holiday destination for UK tourists.

Greece follows closely, then the US (Orlando), Portugal and Italy, which make up the rest of the top five most popular countries visited by UK tourists.

Tapas provides the perfect way to share small plates of food among friends and control your calorie intake Opt for a local Greek salad made with feta cheese, cucumber, olives and tomatoes if you want a light lunchUS food is notorious for its large portion sizes, try sharing grilled meats and salads between a group of friends Freshly-made custard tarts are always popular in Portugal, but be careful about their high sugar content Avoid large servings of pasta and dishes made with cream and cheese if your watching your waistline Choose fruit lollies and sorbets to cool down as opposed to ice creams which can triple the calories

1. Be realistic and put weight loss goals aside for your holiday, instead look to maintain your current weight as holidays are to be enjoyed after all.

2. Research your destination for the best places to eat that offer a good choice of healthy foods.

3. Pick one of your meals each day to indulge and eat light for the remainder. All inclusive buffets often offer a good selection of foods to choose from.

4. If you are self-catering, then make the most of the interesting fresh local produce on offer opting for grilled meat or fish with large servings of fresh salads.

5. Watch the booze and instead mix spirits with diet sodas or go for refreshing spritzers.

6. Savoury snacks at drinks parties are all too temping after a few glasses of wine so try a small healthy treat before you go out. Have vegetables or a handful of olives over crisps and nuts.

7. Pack some chopped fruit in a cooler bag to take to the beach for snacks instead of choosing crisps or fried snacks from the local beach bar.

8. Opt for sorbets and fruit lollies to cool down rather than ice cream, which can be triple the calories.

9. Choose salads and vegetables with your meal when you eat out over calorie-laden carbohydrate options such as chips.

10. Make time for a little exercise that can be fun on the beach, whether it is a few laps of the pool or a walk along the coast.
