The Dangers of Exfoliating Face Scrubs: Environmental & Skin Care Hazards Revealed – Fashion Times

The latest skincare gossip is all about scrubs. Sloughing away dead skin cells to reveal the new, glowing skin beneath has inspired us all to scrub almost daily. But buyer beware when it comes to that exfoliating formula. L.A. based celebrity skincare expert Kerry Benjamin agrees. The beauty pro sat down with us to chat about how scrubs do more harm then good! Read below and find out why Kerry never lets her A-list red carpet stars use scrubs on their faces.

Kerry, why are scrubs so popular?

The majority of skincare lines have manufactured scrubs and people have been told to use them to exfoliate their skin. I think this is terrible advice and that peels are a much better option.

What are some of the benefits people like to use scrubs for?

People choose scrubs for exfoliation of dead skin, but they are getting the bare minimum of the benefit. Can you tell I’m not a huge fan of scrubs yet?

People understand that exfoliation is necessary for healthy skin. Scrubs became the predominant way of doing this. I believe the people have the totally wrong impressions of peels. They think they are harsh, when in reality, peels are not abrasive and are significantly more effective than scrubs.

What are the dangers in using a scrub?

Scrubs that contain jagged, sharp edges that do not dissolve such as pit fruit seeds and nutshells are very abrasive. They scratch, tear, and rip your skin. These tiny abrasions damage your skin and accelerate aging.  Plus, people with sensitive skin conditions such as eczema can’t use scrubs because they are too abrasive and only worsen the inflammation.

What if you experience a breakout on your face or body as a result of using a scrub? What can youth do fix the issue?

It’s unlikely the scrub will cause an acne breakout, but if you do get a breakout, you’ll want to treat it with topicals that will kill the bacteria, calm the inflammation and exfoliate the skin.

Are there any DIY scrubs we can make at home that work effectively?

Sugar and salt can be OK, but they are still abrasive and a lot of times, people tend to scrub way too hard further irritating their skin.

More to come on how often you should exfoliate your skin and the environmental concerns surrounding scrubs, coming soon.
