Maybe you just found out that your cholesterol levels are a little high. Or the doctor just told you that you need to lose weight. Maybe you are just tired of being the self-deprecating big person in your group of friends. Or you simply looked at yourself in the mirror and came to the stark realization that it’s time to start taking care of yourself. Deciding is easy, but getting down to it is the hard part.
Whatever your reasons are for losing weight, know that you are not alone. Every day several people decide to start eating better and losing weight. They also have no idea or plan as to how they will actually achieve their weight loss goals. But let me tell you from experience that the one thing you should do straight away to start losing weight is to eat healthy. Diet constitutes for 70% of your weight loss journey, say experts. I had a love and hate relationship with food. I loved all the bad things – fizzy drinks, chocolates, pizzas – and hated all the good stuff – broccoli, almonds, olives etc. I vowed to eat healthy and managed to do so for a day or two. And then inevitably I would certainly be back to buying a sandwich for lunch, and heating up some ramen noodles for dinner.
We all know that eating healthy isn’t just about strict dietary limitations, staying thin, or deprivation. It’s about feeling great, having more energy and being in better moods. So then, why is it so hard to eat healthy when we know how beneficial it is? Why can’t we order a salad or soup when we go out instead of momos and pizzas?
One reason I’ve discovered is that healthy eating almost always means eating food that is bland and tasteless. It might not be the case for everybody, but it has actually most definitely been the reason why I eat ‘good’ food for a day or two until I decide I can’t put myself through the torture anymore, and junk food takes over again.
A friend recently got me in touch with a fitness instructor who focuses on diet as much as she does on her strenuous workouts. She shared some of her diet tips and salad recipes that I’m sharing with you all today, hoping we can go on this journey together. I’ve never been a fan of “diets”, detoxes, juice cleanses, or crash-fads that result in vast fluctuations in your body weight and health so her tips and recipes seemed just perfect.
I’ve been following her advice and eating healthy for two weeks now. Not only can I feel the difference, I also don’t feel like gorging on food when I see my colleagues eating momos and pastas during lunch break. Her main diet tip is to reduce carbohydrates from your diet and opt for protein instead. Also, she advises her clients to fill up on fiber and have six small meals throughout the day. The meals can comprise of a handful of nuts, a fruit, some cheese, or anything you want as long as you keep the portion small.
When the intervals between your meals are too large, your body tends to go on energy conservation mode and store what you eat. But when you have small meals at regular intervals, your metabolism is high and your body burns what you eat. In other words, the more frequently you eat, the lesser are your chances of becoming fat. Eating regularly doesn’t mean eating large meals. Just eat a little every two to three hours. The plus edge of this is also that you won’t ever feel hungry and thus you’ll be less likely to gorge on junk food.
I recommend all those struggling with weight loss to try eating healthy with me. You will definitely feel and see the changes and that will motivate you to keep at it. So this week, try having salads for lunch and dinner. You’ll be surprised at how filling it can be, and also how refreshing and energizing the right salad can be. Try the recipes I’ve shared and add your own tweaks to keep things interesting.
Disclaimer: I am not a fitness expert. I’m just someone who has actually worked hard to lose weight. I have consulted a dietician friend to find out what works for me, and suggest you do the same. I’m only sharing my weight loss experience through The Week and trying to motivate you all to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It’s always best to get an experts advice before beginning a diet and workout plan. Stop exercising if you experience pain during the workout. Also never reduce your calorie intake to less than 1000.
