NAMBOUR General Hospital staff and visitors seeking sustenance could soon be able to buy fruit cups, salad tubs and heat-and-eat meals from vending machines.
Tenders have been called for a vending machine provider who can provide healthy eating options for Nambour and Gympie hospitals.
The healthy options machines are on the wishlist of Wishlist, which has managed the Nambour Hospital vending machines with the hospital’s auxiliary.
The two organisations collect commission from the machines to support their work.
Wishlist chief executive officer Lisa Rowe said healthy vending machines options were sought in line with the A Better Choices Strategy.
The strategy is designed to improve the healthy food and drink choices available to staff and visitors at Queensland Health facilities.
Ms Rowe said commission collected by Wishlist from the machines would go back into the Health 4 Life Program at the hospital providing health support for Nambour Hospital staff.
She said machines the machines at the hospital had reach the end of their contract and it was an ideal time to seek healthier options.
“It would be great to have salad cups and pre-packed meals so that when the kiosks and cafes across the road are closed, our doctors and other staff have the option to go and find a healthy choice in the machines,” she said.
But Ms Rowe envisaged traditional vending machine food would still be available.
She said “there’s still a place for chips and chocolate.”
The vending machine contents at the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital are unknown. Ms Rowe said Wishlist and the hospital auxiliary’s management rights did not extend to the new hospital at Kawana because of the public-private operation arrangement.
