When making a conscious decision to not only maintain healthy hair but to actually grow long hair one must prepare to make some consistent changes. Consistency leads to habits and just like hair growth forming a habit takes time so remember to be patient with yourself and with your hair.
The general population may not realize the importance of having a healthy scalp as well as ends that are adequately moisturized and full of life. Most people tend to either focus on one or the other.
Healthy Scalp
Maintaining a healthy scalp includes drinking plenty of water, eating a well balanced diet, as well as a healthy moisture balance. Similar to a plant, our hair and body need water to survive. Yes your water intake can and will effect your hair health.
Ingesting nutrient rich foods, especially veggies, protein can aid in the health as well as your rate of hair growth. Where we lack in our diets we can make up for with a daily supplement. Most daily supplements contain a number of minerals and vitamins that the body needs to maintain proper immune health.
Giving you scalp a massage with your favorite light hair oil can help stimulate hair growth. Massaging your scalp will encourage blood flow to the scalp which is a sure way to encourage if not increase hair growth.
Ok Magazine suggests checking your iron levels, as being deficient in iron can lead to hair loss in pre menopausal women.
Supplements
Biotin is found in many different foods readily available to most people; eggs, cheese, nuts, grains, leafy green vegetables, avocado, raspberries, cauliflower, just to name a few.
Some find that taking biotin alone is beneficial to speedy hair growth, while others find that they grow more body hair than hair on their head. Some have even reported severe headaches as a result of biotin alone or have ingested too high a dose at one time.
There are no known side effects to taking biotin however, starting off with a small dosage and listening to you body is key when taking this supplement.
Healthy Ends
Keeping your ends healthy and moisturized is vital to seeing the results of your growth. Your ends are the oldest part of your hair and tend to lose life and break off quickly if not properly tended to or just downright neglected.
Good Housekeeping suggests minimizing the amount of heat used on the hair or at least use heat styling tools on a lower heat setting.
There are a number of steps you can take to ensure your ends remain healthy and in tact.
- Condition your hair regularly. Conditioning after you shampoo your hair will infuse moisture that has been lost during the cleansing process.
- Do a pre shampoo treatment. Applying a fatty oil to at least the ends of your hair for an allotted amount of time before you shampoo will help minimize the stripping process while shampooing your hair.
- Do not hold on to dead ends. Find the strength to let go of split ends before they begin to travel up the remainder of your hair shaft. Once your ends are dead they are nearly impossible to revive.
- Try co-washing (washing your hair with conditioner). Co-washing in place of conditioner every once in awhile may help retain moisture in your hair. Co-washing should not be a permanent replacement for shampoo as the scalp and hair need clarifying periodically.
